For everyone else, we'll see you in the next semester!

Japanese Female Wrestling - Ladies of Hustle part 5

And continuing on with the ladies of the Japanese wrestling promotion Hustle.....

Erica - japanese wrestler

Erica
Remember what I said earlier about what they did to Awesome (Amazing) Kong?
Well look at what they did to her friend and mentor Aja Kong.
They used her real name Erica, but they basically changed everything else.
She and Margaret held the HUSTLE Super Tag Team Championship at one time.
That is until they were beaten by Team 3D (yes, Brother Ray and Brother Devon, who probably fit right in at Hustle. I wonder if they did their old ECW gimmick there?)
The match they were in was a three way tag team, and the other team was Mark Jindrak and Matt Morgan.
Geez.....

Jaguar Y - japanese wrestlers

Jaguar Y
And here is another Joshi legend that wrestled in Hustle, Jaguar Yokota.
Underneath the cute kitty make up is a woman that is considered one of the greatest female wrestlers of all time.
She wrestled as a heel for the Monster faction.

Suzuki Hiroko - japanese woman wrestling

Suzuki Hiroko
Here is another lady you might recognize from the WWE.
Hiroko used to be on WWE's SmackDown! as the valet for her husband Kenzo Suzuki.
She kept up with that in Hustle, before becoming the General Manager and turning on Kenzo.

Watching Fights

Watch fights! Especially Thais.I post a lot of them here, of course. The key is to watch the pace of the fight, the timing of the exchanges and other characteristics of the fight that highlight effectiveness...You should definitely watch for all the things that you have learned from your instructors.

For me, it has been weeks since I really sat down and watched an entire MT fight. However, going back and watching the very last fight I posted here (Orono and Namkabuan), it was a great refresher on how real Muaythai style exchanges are handled. I like it because its a great way to remind me of all the holes in my own performances and where to really work on.

Whether it's returning right away after being hit, proper exchanging in the clinch or really working that teep (push kick) with correct timing, make sure you are watching fights to pick up or remind yourself of the most useful tactics used in Muaythai

Lastly, try to judge a traditional Muaythai fight. See if you can pick out the winner. It's a great exercise in expanding your knowledge of the game!

If you follow the wrong star

Teachers' day celebration today (: j2s are not supposed to go school for any celebration.still we crashed, for zn! great friends rite? hehe.brave her, well done! ((:

Amulets of Muay Thai: an Introduction

You've probably seen traditional fighters entering the ring with a whole bunch of stuff covering them. If you were wondering what they're called, and what they mean, here is a basic introduction.

Canada's World Champ Clifton Brown in full pre-fight attire

Mongkol (pronounced "Mong- kon"):

First off, the Mongkol is unique to Muay Thai, and is not used in Cambodia or Burma (which have very similar arts, such as Pradal Serey); that particular fact is from Wikipedia lol. The Mongkol is a often described as a "crown". It is a sacred (blessed by a monk) piece used to represent the gym or camp the fighter represents.
In the past, each camp had their own distinct Mongkols, but now gyms often have more than one. Fighters do not touch it; It is placed (before the fight) and removed (after the Ram Muay) by their Kru Muay.

Prajied:

These arm bands worn around the bicep are meant to protect the fighter from harm. They are worn throughout the whole fight. They are given to the fighter by friend, family etc

Fight Video: Orono Por Muang Ubon vs Namkabuan Nongkeepayahut

A fight between two legends: Orono the "Black Super man" (I'm not kidding...I read that they actually called him that) and Namkabuan the "Ring Genius"

Watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CiPpHhlpmn4

By the way...for anyone that's actually followed this blog and the fighters I've posted- Here's pic of the two Oronos so you can tell them apart:

Orono Wor Petchpun (current phenom) and Orono (MT legend)

I came across that picture on google when trying to get pictures for both fighters featured in this post.

Get Open Crew/Alphabet Soup

The Get Open Crew
(from left)Kiambu/Push, Devan/Seyes, Baruch, Siba Giba and friend below
The crew was a collection of DJs, MCs, Producers and Graffiti writers, this was taken by me in New York 1992

Push Seyes 1992
Push was also known as Kiambu, an MC in Alphabet Soup (Headrush) an Early 90's Hiphop group, and Bruknahm. They had the sickest Blackbooks I have ever seen then and since. Next to the Syo (Seyes) throwy is a Omni 156/AOK/XTC/BYI throw up, who we also knew.

Push Blackbook Piece

Seyes83 Blackbook Throw-up

Alphabet Soup Press Shot
The group consisted of:
(from left Nubian, Melkuan, Deflon, Brother Love and Kiambu)

The group came out in 1991, and sounded similar to the Native Tongue's Black Sheep, but the production was a bit more experimental, and it was more openly Conscious/Political. It was released by independent label Akirfa Recordings which I think was based in a Comic shop, because that's where I got my copy, until Kiambu gave me some more to give to UK DJs. I met the rest of the group briefly when they came to our collage to chill with Kiambu.
I have a copy of a radio tape I recorded in London Xmas 1991 of Westwood or someone on Kiss playing it, and it featured in a Hip-Hop chart (Blues & Soul?) when it came out too. The group was forced to change their name to Headrush as there was another group called Alphabet Soup at that time on a major label.

Kiambu became a part of Bruknahm with along with Siba Giba and X-clan associate Saundi, and Released and album under that name and still record under the name The Get Open Crew, working with some European artists and Sadat X (Brand Nubian, LowLife). Deflon produced a track on a Mo Wax compilation in 95/96.

Siba Giba originally from Paris, grew up in New York City, going back and forth. He has released two books, one a Hip-Hop version of the famous original Paris Graffiti Book 'Paris-Tonkar', featuring interviews with KRS-One, Tim Dog, and others in 1992. The other one was a Jazz book project, "Jazz Zoom, Carryin’ It On" started by his mother by Desdemone Bardin, who sadly passed away before she could see it finished. Desdemone Bardin was one of the first French educators to use Hip-Hop as a way to teach English, and was an early promoter of the culture in Paris.
He released his first record with a German label, and recorded a crew track with fellow label mates First Down a UK Hip-Hop group featuring Aroe (Aroe & The Soundmakers).
He runs OvertimeRecords and has produced for California early 90's underground legends Freestyle Fellowship, Daddy-O (Stetsasonic), Everlast (House Of Pain) and others.

He is currently working on The Hip Hop Loves Foundation. The Hip-Hop Loves Foundation (HHLF) educates underprivileged people globally through Hip-Hop culture’s positive and unifying attributes.

He is still making music and here is a exclusive copy of his Swagger Like Us remix

Japanese Female Wrestling - Ladies of Hustle part 4

More of the ladies of Hustle.....

Karate Girl-asian female wrestling
Karate Girl (or simply) KG debuted with Hustle in 2008.
She had a feud with her former tag team partner Chie because of a mess up during a tag team match.

Chie-japanese wrestlers
Chie was KG's partner and she debuted with Hustle in 2005.
It's said that she has an amateur wrestling background.
Chie retired from wrestling in 2009 to get married.

Francoise-japanese wrestler
Francoise is no stranger to this blog. She debuted with Hustle in February of 2009 as the girlfriend of former WWE star Lance Cade.
Francoise may have been brought in to replace the departing Yinling who will probably get a whole entry to herself.

The Completely Unnecessary Marvel Comics 70th Anniversary Graphic Novel Cover Meme

From Stuart Immonen:

Here’s the deal. Remember the Typophile Album Cover Meme? This is much like that, requiring you to re-imagine a Marvel Comics cover from the last 70 years as an actual contemporary novel cover. Follow the steps below, and post the results on your own site or forum:

1) Click this link for a list of Marvel publications from a random month and year at Wikia.com: Random Marvel date*. Choose the 7th cover (if there are fewer than 7, choose the last one). EDIT: I thought I had the java script working but I don't - click over to Stuart's post and follow his directions there. HIs link works.

2) Search for the first word appearing on the cover that jumps out at you (this may be the title itself) on Flickr. Select the 7th (or last) image (as with the album cover meme, it’s best to select an image with Creative Commons rights released).

3) Use your favourite image manipulation app to create a new 6×9 image, incorporating the original title (and as much other original text as you like) and the new image.

4) Share!

I got July 1959 and Tales to Astonish #4:

and here's my revision/update:

To see what some others have come up with, see Stuart's post here.

Happy 70th Marvel Comics.

Fight Video: Germaine De Randamie vs Angela Parr

Thought I would post up a female fight. I actually have trouble finding clips of women's muay thai of good-quality. Admittedly, I don't know alot of female fighters outside of the ones Kru has sent my way to watch...hopefully that'll change and I can post up some more strong female fighters

This is Germaine De Randamie fighting Angela Parr

If you haven't heard of Germaine, you've definitely heard of her now.

Is this possibly Japanese bikini model Yuko Aoki?

Japanese Female Wrestling: Ladies of Hustle part 3

Back to our "Ladies of Hustle" we have some more Japanese female wrestlers that aren't really Japanese.

Caiya-japanese girls wrestling

Caiya (Carolyn Kawasaki) was born in Chicago, but she is a gaijin tarento (talent) that like many of our celebrities is famous for being...famous.
She's an actress. she has released four books and a jewelry line, but she's included here because of her time as a wrestler.
Yes wrestler.
Caiya (as she is known in Japan) wanted to become a wrestler because she loved the WWE divas.
She had matches against Giant Silva and also Tajiri.
WHAT?
Yes, 7 foot 2 inch Giant Silva and the "Japanese Buzzsaw"Tajiri.
Caiya made her pro wrestling debut at Hustle Aid.
At Hustle Aid 2006, she tag teamed with Naoya Ogawa (Olympic judo champion, pro wrestler and MMA fighter) to take on Giant Silva (again) and Giant Vabo.
Silva and Vabo won.

Wild HAKAIYA-japanese pro wrestling

She was known as Wild HAKAIYA in Hustle, but you may know her as Trenesha Biggers, Panther Claw, Black Barbie or TNA Knockout Rhaka Khan.
I really don't see why this 6'2, 116 pound amazon isnt more popular.
Okay, aside from all that Kurt Angle stuff and the other assorted craziness.

Margaret-japanese women wrestling
And yes this is the powerful, imposing, 6'1, 272 pound Kia Stevens, better known as Amazing Kong or TNA Knockout Awesome Kong.
In Hustle she was known as Margaret.
Quite a change from her usual Xena-like battle garb isnt it?
(Wait till you see what they did to her friend and mentor Aja Kong!)

Two Down...

It's August 21st, the second anniversary of this blog, and in keeping with tradition that also means... it's Hellboy Day! Like last year, I have no time to spare for anything elaborate, so I've slapped some quick colors on a commission that I previously posted in black and white. Yes, Hellboy deserves better, but it'll have to do for now. Thanks to all my regular visitors and subscribers, and a special thanks as always to those of you who leave your comments. I'm hoping to post more often in the future, even if it's just a quick doodle or something, and if there's anything in particular any of you want to see here let me know! On to year three!

WILL WORK FOR CAPPUCCINO

I have been on vacation all this week and have truly relaxed and enjoyed it! I had a mental list prepared as to what I had hoped to get done while on this vacation and as usual haven't completed nearly enough on the list. Oh well... I think I needed the relaxation part.

Last weekend, my husband Mike and I experienced the "empty nest" scenario. My daughter Amanda left on Friday to spend the weekend with my brother Marc and his family in North Carolina. Amanda lives at home with us. We also have two sons, Adam, who is married and lives in Benton, Maine with his wife Amber and our grand-dog Ella, and Chris, who goes to Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida.

We went with Amanda to Boston to get her to the airport because this was her first trip to North Carolina and only the 2nd airplane trip by herself. After getting her on the plane, we ventured into the tourist section of Boston to walk around Quincy Market and the other interesting shops in that section. We couldn't have asked for better weather and really enjoyed the day.

The next day, we decided to check out coastal Maine and went to the Pemaquid Fort area to see some crafters at a yearly fair that they have at the fort. Again, it was a gorgeous day and the drive along the coast was amazing. I would love to have a place by the ocean!

On Sunday, we got up early and headed over to the driving range owned by my in-laws - A&M Driving Range, right in Winslow. My father in law has been having some health issues and my husband has been helping him out at the range quite a bit this summer. Mike needed to get the weekly mowing done and I went along to drive the golf cart with ball picker upper so that the golfballs wouldn't get eaten up by the mower.

I hadn't driven the golf cart with the ball picker upper (I'm sure that there is a more professional name for it but this describes it better) since last summer, so I needed a short refresher. Mike backed it up for me and all I had to do was get in and take off. I was working on the first 75 yards so that Mike could mow, when my father in law showed up. He seemed surprised but pleased that we were there working so early on a Sunday morning. Mike stopped to talk to him but I kept making my circular swipes picking up golfballs so that Mike could get further along on the mowing before we had customers.

I was starting to feel a little like a Nascar driver behind the wheel of the golf cart and getting a little too cocky when I made a turn and misjudged the width on the ball picker upper and ended up running into the metal screened fencing that my father in law puts up on the outer edges of the range so that the balls won't go into the tall grass on either side. How embarassing!! Of course I had to do it just when the boss shows up....

I stopped the golf cart and then was fumbling around trying to remember how to put it in reverse. Of course, Mike had done that part for me at the beginning.. Just as my father in law was approaching on foot, I remembered that reverse was just under the seat near my calf and put the cart into reverse and away from the fence. My father in law was chuckling as he came up to me. I made some comment about finding it hard to get good help and started on my way again!

He walked around to the wetter sections of the range picking up the balls with a homemade picker upper and tossing them in my section so that I would get them on the next swipe. I've gotten the cart stuck in the wetter sectons in past years, so I've learned to stay away from them. He would look up and smile each time I made a pass thru and I couldn't help but think that my husband was as cute as his dad and he has the same joking nature!

After we started getting customers, we had to stop, but I had managed to get the first 125 yards picked up. The rest of the mowing had to wait until it quieted down again. You can pick up balls with the golf cart because of the screened in protection (it gives the golfers a target), but you can't mow.

My father in law treated us to coffee for Mike and a cappuccino for me and it was another great day! As much fun as it is to drive the golf cart and ball picker upper, I do think I'll stick to jewelry making!!
