english fish... where are the chips

These shots come to us from North Devon, UK. (Chris Preston of the Adventures in Trim blog and frequent Drift contributor). The board is a 5'10" Gulfstream (local north devon shaper) that was from a fish template of Jimmy Blears. Chris informed me that Jimmy Blears beat David Nuuhiwa on a fish in the 1972 World Title. Thanks for the info, hope the facts are accurate.

Mr Hynd and a frye fish

Much props must be paid to Andrew Kidman's filming of Derek at J-bay on a his Skip Frye fish n Litmus. This film section has obviously had a major impact on the resurgence of the fish platform.

Julianne Moore

I love the New York Times Style Magazine and I am loving this cover.  Let's not forget the lady is 49, a testament to us all don't you think?  The entire look of the shot is incredibly hot and theatrical, not to mention the amazing necklace!  To read the full story on Women's Fashion 2010 click here.

Write up for the York Muay Thai fighters in Calgary at H2H Retribution

Here are the official write ups for York Muay Thai's fighters performances in Calgary over the weekend!

"Ari Markle (Calgary, Canada) vs. Nic Du Preez (Toronto, Canada)

Calgarian Ari Markle battled with Toronto's Nic Du Preez. The fight started off quite close. Du Preez opened with some kicks but was to immediately pounce to vicious elbow attacks.
One did score and gave the Calgarian a cut above the right eye. Markle was to fight back but started to hesitate on pulling the trigger. Du Preez was almost always first off the line. By the third round, Markle seemed flat footed and was hesitating on attacking.
This encouraged Du Preez to pressure forward for a KO, but he just could not find it. Nic Du Preez won by unanimous decision. Du Preez was to win the Roy Lilley Trophy of the event for the Best Visiting Athlete."

"Mark MacKinnon (Calgary, Canada) vs. Brian Trinh (Toronto, Canada)

This bout opened with Thinh pressing forward and trying to land his right hand on the taller MacKinnon. A few landed which brought immediate respect from the Calgary athlete.
In rounds two and three, MacKinnon decided he did not like getting punched and he used his roundhouse kick to the body and use very well placed teep's to keep Trinh at bay.
Trinh fought back gamely but had a difficult time getting through the long kicks to score his right hand. A unanimous decision went to Mark MacKinnon."

Capri

I woke up today wishing I was on this beautiful island.  I saw myself lazying around in a fabulous villa, then strolling into La Piazzetta for a cappuccino, breakfast and a little shopping.....Then off to a gorgeous beach, maybe one with a towel service or maybe a little private white sand paradise.....of course after I would find myself at a wonderful spa to round out my glorious day and would then head back to the villa for a cat nap....At sunset I'd be refreshed, wearing something amazing and would wander back into town with a fabulous lover on my arm to enjoy an incredible evening in this wonderland...

Hollywood - no, it's not all that bad

I realize that some of my posts on this blog have tended to have an anti-Hollywood bias.  So in an effort to not seem like a complete dour sour-puss I thought I'd share with you some of the movies that I actually did enjoy in 2009:

(insert sounds of crickets chirping)

No, seriously, here we go (in stream-of-consciousness order):

- Inglourious Basterds
- District 9
- The Hurt Locker
- A Serious Man
- Up in The Air
- Up
- Watchmen
- Adventureland
- The Blind Side (ok, I admit I actually cried a little)
- The Cove
- Food, Inc.
- Let the Right One In (yeah, it was released in 2008 but I didn't see it until 2009)
- Drag Me to Hell
- Paranormal Activity
- Tell No One (alright, yes that was produced even further back in 2006 but what can I say, I miss some things you know)
- Knowing
- The Hangover
- Anvil!
- Star Trek
- Avatar (the first 90 minutes only - see my post here:)

You see, most of those are Hollywood-produced films, with a sprinkling of indies, docs and foreign films as well.

Ah... there, now I feel all warm and cozy knowing that great movies can be made despite the risk-averse Hollywood mainstream that continues to churn out ripoffs, retreads and sequels.

(oops, sorry - just can't help myself sometimes.)
