Our French American Brothers Siba Giga, Kiambu (Alphabet Soup) & Saundi's group Brüknahm have just released their 2nd LP. CITY OF LIGHT. (Recorded in Paris) features a progressive blend of Jazz, Electro & Hip-Hop.
featuring David Murray, Nasheet Waits, Abraham Burton, Rasul Siddik, Get Open among others.
Brüknahm CITY OF LIGHT is available on iTunes here!!!!

Saundi & Siba Giba
We have discussed Siba Giga and The Get Open Crew here. Siba Giba's hard working Hip-Hop ethics did much to inspire us at The Kool Skool. His large production credits include working with Everlast (3X Platinum "Whitey Ford Sings the Blues" LP 1998). Sadat X & Get Open EP (Yellow Production 1997). Bruknahm (Overtime Records/Knitting Factory 2002).
He also worked with Jazz Legend Lester Bowie (Art Ensemble of Chicago), Maceo Parker, Vinia Mojica, Daddy-O (Stetsasonic), Shurik'n (IAM /France), Faf LaRage (France), Main Concept (Germany), and Producer for The Jettsonz Productions (Nina Sky, Sean Paul)

The now hard to get "Freestyle" (Massot/Millet Pub. France-1992) a book of interviews and photos of international Hip-Hop artists including Afrika Bambaataa, The Last Poets, Public Enemy, KRS 1, Rock Steady Crew, MC Solar, IAM, NTM among others, Co-authored with his late mother D.Bardin is a classic. It was a companion book to the Paris-Tonkar "Graffiti art in Paris and France in the 1980s", and we featured it here

Saundi on the keys!
Overtime Records Inc. is an independent music production and publishing company, based in Brooklyn NY. X-Clan were the pinnacle of the Conscious Hip-Hop movement with regards to imagery, production and structure. The Brooklyn based group fused Education with Funk, to represent a new Pan-African cultural shift in the Hip-Hop Movement, which also included artists like Jungle Brothers, Brand Nubian, Lakim Shabazz, Public Enemy, BDP King Sun and many others.

Hip-Hop is "a lifestyle, not a Death-style" - Paradise Gray X-Clan/Universal Zulu Nation/Blackwatch Movement activist breaking down the Universal Zulu Nation, the negative aspects of music industry, and the "inclusiveness of Hip-Hop Culture". Must see!!!

Gangstarr's GURU R.I.P.

Keith E. - The GURU R.I.P. By Shucks One ID
(Pass this on but please add link)

Regardless of the break up with DJ Premier, his recent release quality, and the extraordinary politricks going on, The Guru was 1 half of the longest running Hip-Hop recording group Gangstarr, the only group representing the true DJ/MC relationship. He will be sorely missed....

Ghost Writer, "I'm The Cat That You Don't See!!!"

Ghost Writer
–noun
a person who writes one or numerous speeches, books, articles, etc., for another person who is named as or presumed to be the author.
Also, ghostwriter.
Origin:
1895–1900, Americanism

Mad Skills- Ghost Writer

Came up with Timberland, VA native, smashed NY MCs at Open Mic battles, produced by the best of the era, think Large Professor. Wrote lyrics for alot of BIG rappers and called them out on this live version!!!!! Come!

The Game - Ghost Writer

Ghost Writer Rapper - Sauce Money
Sauce Money is an MC who for the late Versace era was getting alot of Magazine coverage. He released a few independant underground 12"s on rare labels, but got a name Ghost Writing, or writing lyrics for other "Made" Rappers. It was a while ago but I remember him saying he wrote for Mase, Lil Cease and no doubt several Rocafella Records affilliates, Jay-Z?

Sauce Money - Last Real N**** Alive Freestyle
Kay Slay Drama King Freestyle
"It was my man Jay(-Z) who discovered me, I remembered the Rock(afella) used to cover me..." Sauce exclaiming the lack of support from Rocafella records that he claims he helped write hits for, "without clearance (credit)".
Perhaps hinting that he ghost wrote for Beanie Seigal, amonst others??

Big Jaz/Jaz-O Marcy Projects old School MC guests on Sauces 1999 album he also claims Jay-Z didn't support his career once he blew, allegedly... Read more here

Sauce Money (DJ Premier) - Against The Grain

Sauce Money VS. Nature (The Firm)
OOOH No! Nature (The Firm) calls Sauce one of the Fat Boys...
"You're claim to fame is that you call me fat?!!! Well anyone who can see n***** can call me that! Well heres the thing Purse Snatcher...." - Sauce Wins!
Hilarious! Purse Snatcher.... Pwaaaaaahhahahaha!

Get Open Crew/Alphabet Soup

The Get Open Crew
(from left)Kiambu/Push, Devan/Seyes, Baruch, Siba Giba and friend below
The crew was a collection of DJs, MCs, Producers and Graffiti writers, this was taken by me in New York 1992

Push Seyes 1992
Push was also known as Kiambu, an MC in Alphabet Soup (Headrush) an Early 90's Hiphop group, and Bruknahm. They had the sickest Blackbooks I have ever seen then and since. Next to the Syo (Seyes) throwy is a Omni 156/AOK/XTC/BYI throw up, who we also knew.

Push Blackbook Piece

Seyes83 Blackbook Throw-up

Alphabet Soup Press Shot
The group consisted of:
(from left Nubian, Melkuan, Deflon, Brother Love and Kiambu)

The group came out in 1991, and sounded similar to the Native Tongue's Black Sheep, but the production was a bit more experimental, and it was more openly Conscious/Political. It was released by independent label Akirfa Recordings which I think was based in a Comic shop, because that's where I got my copy, until Kiambu gave me some more to give to UK DJs. I met the rest of the group briefly when they came to our collage to chill with Kiambu.
I have a copy of a radio tape I recorded in London Xmas 1991 of Westwood or someone on Kiss playing it, and it featured in a Hip-Hop chart (Blues & Soul?) when it came out too. The group was forced to change their name to Headrush as there was another group called Alphabet Soup at that time on a major label.

Kiambu became a part of Bruknahm with along with Siba Giba and X-clan associate Saundi, and Released and album under that name and still record under the name The Get Open Crew, working with some European artists and Sadat X (Brand Nubian, LowLife). Deflon produced a track on a Mo Wax compilation in 95/96.

Siba Giba originally from Paris, grew up in New York City, going back and forth. He has released two books, one a Hip-Hop version of the famous original Paris Graffiti Book 'Paris-Tonkar', featuring interviews with KRS-One, Tim Dog, and others in 1992. The other one was a Jazz book project, "Jazz Zoom, Carryin’ It On" started by his mother by Desdemone Bardin, who sadly passed away before she could see it finished. Desdemone Bardin was one of the first French educators to use Hip-Hop as a way to teach English, and was an early promoter of the culture in Paris.
He released his first record with a German label, and recorded a crew track with fellow label mates First Down a UK Hip-Hop group featuring Aroe (Aroe & The Soundmakers).
He runs OvertimeRecords and has produced for California early 90's underground legends Freestyle Fellowship, Daddy-O (Stetsasonic), Everlast (House Of Pain) and others.

He is currently working on The Hip Hop Loves Foundation. The Hip-Hop Loves Foundation (HHLF) educates underprivileged people globally through Hip-Hop culture’s positive and unifying attributes.

He is still making music and here is a exclusive copy of his Swagger Like Us remix

Kings County's Jaz-O "The Originator"

Marcy Projects representer Jaz-O is holding his own against the multi-billion dollar steam roller that is modern Rap industry. Some might say that youtube disses and expose videos are cheap fame moves, and we tend to agree but when you are up against a giant, sometimes you have to do David steps...

Brooklyn's The Jaz is known to many as "the Mentor of Jay-Z", but there is much more to him than that, he came to the publics attention in the late 80's as a concious rapper in a period when the scene was dominated by Queens borough MCs. So whether he was talking about Police brutality in "Its Your Nature"; or in the Originators video wearing the crown and regalia of Dr. Malachi Z. York-El's Nuwaubian Nation of Moors organization, you know he was on some serious knowledge.

Jaz-O - The Originators Feat. Jay-Z

"Are you men living in God realities or Gods with man mentalities?" Jaz-O Love Has Gone

Texas born DJ Premier who has made Brooklyn his home, has done production for many Brooklyn old
Schoolers Just-Ice, Big Daddy Kane (pictured), and in 2002 produced Jaz-O and the Immobilaire underground banger Love Is Gone.

Since the not so subtle Love is Gone record about Jay-Z, where Jaz-O laments the break up of their longtime friendship, there have been many back and forths between Jaz-O and Jay-Z that you may have heard. Jaz-O going at the whole of Rocafella when they were at their most Tonka on Nore's "Nothin'", Jay-Z and Rocafella all at him in return. Jay-Z mentions the fact that Jaz-O was 40 years old at that time but that would come back to haunt him when he fell out with Camron and Dipset though...

Jaz-O explains his side of the story

It seemed to have ended a while back with this freestyle , but recently with the Dame Dash & Jaz-O "Happy Birthday" video, Jay-Z has dissed him again on Ludacris's recent song I Do It For Hip Hop co-starring Nas and JAY-Z. And so on and so on and so on....

Happy Birthday to you?
