There are several countries that say that this is not right and that international community should not get involved in internal matters ?

Ambassador Gerard Araud: (France)

First I think no country have discussed the responsibility of the Security Council because as you know on the agenda of the Security Council you have the Middle East, so when we have asked for a public meeting of the Security Council nobody has objected to it. That’s a very important point. What we want to send was simply a message to the Syrian authorities to stop the violence now.

We have heard a briefing by Mr Pascoe. He told us that the city of Dera has been kept without any communication with the exterior for three days. In Dera, there is no electricity, no water, no communication which means that there could be humanitarian consequences on the civilian population. So it was a way to say to the Syrian authorities to stop immediately the use of violence against peaceful demonstrators.
