Spl T20 Postponed To 2012

The Sri Lanka Premier League (SLPL) has been postponed to August 2012 after facing a series of problems, including the unexpected withdrawal of Indian players from availability. In its place Sri Lanka Cricket, the league’s owners, will conduct the regular inter-provincial Twenty20 tournament featuring five domestic sides without involving foreign players.
the decision to postpone the league – which was scheduled to start on July 19 – was taken on Thursday at a meeting between the SLC’s new committee and Somerset Entertainment Ventures, the league’s organisers. Given the BCCI’s decision not to let Indian players participate and the time crunch, both parties felt it prudent to delay the launch. A four-week window in August 2012 was identified as the best time for the tournament; meanwhile the SLC will continue to lobby the BCCI for Indian participation.
The BCCI had withheld its permission on the grounds that Somerset, which owned the commercial rights, would be handling the contracts for international players and that could lead to complications should disputes arise over payments. In order to assuage the Indian board, SLC was willing to back the Indian players’ contracts so that their financial interests were protected, but that was not enough to satisfy the BCCI. There have been suggestions that former IPL chairman Lalit Modi had a hand in the event, but SLC and Somerset have repeatedly denied the allegation, as has Modi.http://Wahab-Riaz.blogspot.com
The BCCI’s decision meant the tournament did not have a broadcaster for the lucrative Indian market, a situation that made it much more difficult for the SLPL to find a secure financial footing. Adding to the sense of confusion was the dissolution last week by Sri Lanka’s sports ministry of the SLC committee, which created the tournament, and its replacement by a new panel.
The Indian board’s stand – which marked a U-turn of sorts after an initial green signal – was contrary to that of the boards of Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and Pakistan, which extended their support to the tournament. Tim May, the chief executive of Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA), had also backed the event.

Shahid Afridi Dropped From Series Vs Ireland

The pull-out comes after days of speculation about Afridi's unhappiness at the decision to remove him as captain, with some local reports even suggesting he would retire from the game altogether, though there is no indication yet that this is the case. Last week the board chose to replace Afridi as ODI captain with Misbah-ul-Haq, despite the former having led Pakistan to the semi-final of the World Cup.

Pakistan are expected to arrive in Ireland on Wednesday, with the two games scheduled for May 28 and 30. The board will not be sending a replacement for Afridi.

English Allrounder Stuart Broad Extended His Contract With Nottinghamshire

England allrounder Stuart Broad has signed a three-year extension to his deal at Nottinghamshire. Broad, 24, arrived at Trent Bridge from Leicestershire in 2007 and is still on a lucrative ECB central contract. His new contract with Nottinghamshire, which runs until 2013, will only come into effect should he lose his England deal.

"We fully expect Stuart will maintain his England place for years to come but this re-affirms his commitment to us," director of cricket Mick Newell said. "We knew he was in the England selectors' thoughts when we signed him in 2008. Although his county appearances have been limited, he has always performed exceptionally well when he's turned out for us."

Broad has made just a single one-day appearance, as well as playing three Twenty20 games and seven County Championship matches in his four years at Trent Bridge. But he may make a few early-season appearances once he recovers from the side strain that curtailed his role in the World Cup last month.

"I'm hoping to play on May 4 at home to Yorkshire," Broad told Sky Sports News. That would give Broad the possibility of two more four-day matches before the first Test against Sri Lanka at Cardiff on 26 May.

"I hope that can be the comeback," said Broad. "Then I can get some Championship wickets before the first Test."

Pakistan Beat Australia ICC Cricket World Cup 2011

Pakistan were the last team to overcome Australia at a World Cup and it was they who brought Ricky Ponting's 34-match unbeaten run with a four-wicket victory in Colombo to secure top spot in Group A. An impressive display in the field laid the foundations as the reigning champions were bundled out for 176 on a difficult surface, their lowest total in a World Cup since 1992, and despite a mighty effort from Brett Lee Pakistan were guided home by Umar Akmal and Abdul Razzaq.

Despite not having either team's progression at stake, the final group positions determine quarter-final opposition while momentum is also a factor. Both teams were hyped for the contest, and it came to an early head when Umar and Brad Haddin almost came to blows in the field. Australia were desperate not to relinquish a proud record dating back to May 23, 1999.

After their batting subsided with 20 balls unused, Australia's only chance was to bowl Pakistan out, but in the event it required Lee himself to do most of the damage. He removed both openers in a fiery new-ball burst before returning to claim Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq with consecutive deliveries in 23rd over, leaving Pakistan wobbling on 98 for 4.

However, support for Lee was too late in coming which didn't leave enough runs for Australia to play with. Mitchell Johnson had Asad Shafiq taken at slip off the glove for a composed 46 and Shahid Afridi brainlessly carved to long-on against Jason Krejza. Surprisingly, Lee wasn't immediately recalled with 34 runs still needed and by the time he came back the target was down to 10. Umar played one of his most composed innings yet, and Razzaq finished the chase with consecutive boundaries.

Stuart Broad Ruled Out Cricket World Cup Tremlett In

Stuart Broad has been ruled out of the remainder of the World Cup with a side strain he picked up during the close win over South Africa two days ago. Chris Tremlett, who has been travelling with the squad as back-up, has been confirmed as his replacement after ICC approval.

Tremlett replaced Broad in the Ashes side after he succumbed to an abdominal tear during the Adelaide Test and great success, finishing with 17 wicket at 23.35 from three Tests. He then played four games of England's 6-1 defeat in the ODIs that followed but was not as effective and leaked 5.24 runs an over.

It took England a day of deliberation to settle upon Tremlett as their replacement. There is a school of thought that England could have wanted to keep him on as back-up for Tim Bresnan, who is coming back from a calf injury, and instead pick legspinner Adil Rashid - who is in the Caribbean with the England Lions at present - in the main squad. As it turned out, they went for the safer option.

Yuvraj Singh saved the blushes for India, allowing them to hide the ordinary effort from other spinners, by picking his maiden five-for to restrict Ireland to 207 before he hit an unbeaten fifty to settle India's nerves in a hard-fought win in Bangalore. Ireland enhanced their reputation by defending the target with disciplined bowling and excellent fielding and made India huff and puff to the victory line.

On a dry pitch, where the ball came on slowly, the Indian batsmen preferred to play within themselves and tried to play risk-free cricket but kept losing wickets at regular intervals to keep Ireland interested in the chase. India were 24 for 2 in the sixth over, reached 100 for four at the fall of Virat Kohli in the 24th over, and recovered to 167 for 5 when MS Dhoni exited in the 41st over before Yusuf Pathan flexed his muscles to hasten the end.

There have been plenty of mismatches so far in this World Cup, but whenever England have taken the field something extraordinary has occurred. Firstly Netherlands pushed them close, then there was the epic tie against India before they were humbled by Kevin O'Brien's stunning hitting. What happens next is anyone's guess, but matches against South Africa are rarely dull affairs.

It's not quite do-or-die for England but it's getting close after they reached the half-way point of their group campaign with three points instead of the expected four. Two wins should take them into the quarter-finals, but that's not an easy task with Bangladesh and West Indies to follow this game. South Africa have far fewer concerns after two clinical victories set up their campaign nicely.

As with every meeting between these two teams there will be the pre-match talk of England's contingent from South Africa. Kevin Pietersen has often lifted his game against the country of his birth, but South Africa have yet to see the best of Jonathan Trott. Despite the strong performances from England's top order there are still issues over the batting, both in terms of soft dismissals like Pietersen's against Ireland and the lack of impact from the middle order which twice cost them dear in Bangalore.

They will be up against the most rounded attack of the tournament. The threat of Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel was well known, but the inclusion of Imran Tahir has given South Africa an additional edge. Not that they are short on batting, either, and AB de Villiers has started the World Cup with back-to-back hundreds; the one against West Indies was elegant, the ton against Netherlands brutal.

Under Andrew Strauss and Andy Flower, England have shown an ability to bounce back following shocking defeats. Often the sight of formidable opponents focuses their mind in the way that being favourites against the likes of Netherlands and Ireland doesn't. However, all aspects of their game will have to fire on the same occasion - which it hasn't at any stage of the tournament - otherwise an early flight home will be an even greater possibility.

A week ago it would have been hard, if not impossible, to countenance the thought of an Ireland win over India. What a difference a week makes. After their stunning win over England, Ireland will believe they have the ability to take on anyone, and while India will undoubtedly be respected they will not be feared.

Ireland are coming up against one of the most formidable batting line-ups in world cricket on a featherbed at the Chinnaswamy stadium, however, and as they prepare to do battle with a top six that packs a whopping 44,503 ODI runs between them (although 17,777 belong to one man) perhaps a little fear wouldn't go amiss. There are significant dangers lurking in India's bowling line-up too. Ireland's XI is likely to have no less than five left-handers in it, and despite the docile playing surface, the challenge of countering multiple offspinners - and possibly Piyush Chawla's googly too - will be a daunting task.

Ireland will insist they're up for it, and after Wednesday night's events, who could argue with them? But if Ireland appear a team transformed, that is only in the eyes of those not close to the setup. Several players, including captain William Porterfield and allrounder John Mooney, have insisted that the result achieved against England is the sort the team go into all their games believing they can pull off.That may be true, but whether they can convert belief into performance against the World Cup favourites, in the hothouse atmosphere sure to be provided by India's fanatical supporters, remains to be seen. The burly allrounder was brutally dismissive of both pace and spin against England and there's no reason to think he'll play any differently against India - although this time he won't have the crowd's support when he does so.It's no secret that international sides have attempted to counter Yusuf Pathan's destructive big-hitting by targeting him with short-pitched fast bowling. Ireland lack the firepower to adopt the same approach and Boyd Rankin, the 6' 6" seamer, is the only bowler who'll come close to troubling him. If Yusuf gets going India could post a total out of the reach of even O'Brien's expansive reach.
