On Friday, October 1st, Versus Gallery will be hosting an art show featuring works by R. Land and Mark George.
A Jacksonville native now living in Atlanta, Georgia, Land is known for his post-pop, swampy cartoon creatures and print style paintings. Some of his most recognizable works are the characters Little Bunny Foo Foo and Loss Cat. Land’s artwork has also been included on the DVD covers of the Adult Swim show, Aqua Teen Hunger Force. It's obvious Land likes to have fun with his artistic creativity and everyone is open to his humoristic criticism. From Jiffy Feet to Yuppie Ghetto, Land is praised by the hip kids, the wealthy art collectors and everyone in between.
Mark George is nothing new to the Jacksonville art scene. He has been active in using his art for charitable fundraising, such as the St. Johns Riverkeeper, and for his friend, local artist and musician Brian Hicks’ battle with cancer. Mark has also shown his work nationally most recently in Seattle and has a show at this years Art Basil in Miami. Many people first notice that Mark’s artwork resembles pop artist Roy Liechtenstein, who is actually Mark’s favorite artist. Mark has created his own style though, by painting on clear corrugated fiberglass he found one day walking through Home Depot while looking for a new media. He actually paints on the backside to protect and give a printed illusion to his work so he has to paint everything in reverse.
Mark and Land are two of Jacksonville's most respected artists and it is a honor that Versus Gallery has a chance to show the two together in a great place like Riverside’s 5 Points. The show is on the 1st Friday of October from 5-9pm on the fourth floor of the 5 Points Theatre Building. This is the only day the works will be shown. Due to both artists’ birthdays being at the beginning of October, there will be an after party following at Birdies which is also located in 5 points.
